About Us
In 1966, Beiter's began as a three-man partnership in a small building at the rear of 406 Hawthorne Avenue in Williamsport, which was then the home of Bob Beiter's parents. Within a year, Bob obtained full ownership with a strong belief that one store could furnish the community with quality appliances at a fair price. Then called Beiter's Appliances, a company was born.
Starting out slowly, the business truly became a family affair, with a number of the Beiter family members working as sales, delivery, customer service and support staff throughout the growth of Beiter's. In 1970, Beiter's Appliance moved to a larger store at 1704 Warren Avenue in Loyalsock and business boomed. In 1973 a second store was added in Bloomsburg (45 miles away). Unfortunately, in December of 1973 the newly rented warehouse burned down, making it financially necessary to close the third store which had just opened in Milton (30 miles away). Because Beiter's was underinsured, Beiter's was forced to close the Bloomsburg store in 1974 and reorganize in Williamsport.
After reorganization, Beiter's moved to a larger store a 544 East Third Street, now East End Lumber and into its first in a commercial area building.
In 1977 Beiter's had an opportunity to sell the building at 544 East Third Street, so we proceeded to build a new building a block down the street at 485 East Third Street, which has since become the Agape Fellowship. Our new building was much bigger and in 1980 we added furniture and bedding lines to the business. Around that same time, kerosene heaters became the craze. We did so well with the addition of furniture and bedding that we ran out of space!
In the fall of 1981, we purchased a building at 322 West Fourth Street in downtown Williamsport from Wolf Furniture Co. At the time, we felt very impressive as the new building boasted 40,000 sq. ft. and two entrances. We also added a 32,000 sq. ft. warehouse the following year.
With sales growing steadily, Beiter's was able to expand once again in 1991 and buy out Bob's Warehouse Outlet in Lock Haven, which features 25,000 sq. ft. of display area and continues to service the Lock Haven, State College, Renovo and surrounding areas. Also in 1991, Beiter's again turned to the Wolf Furniture Co. and purchased their Sunbury store at 349 Market Street, which allowed Beiter's to grow in a new market with 13,000 sq. ft. of display area.
In the spring of 1998, we once again found ourselves ready to expand and ventured north from our Williamsport headquarters. We chose Mansfield for our 4th store location! Formally the Mansfield Farm & Garden Center, it is the smallest of our satellite stores at approximately 11,500 sq. ft. Also in 1998 we built a 12,000 sq. ft. addition to our Williamsport store to house our Berkline Motion Furniture Gallery, Bedding Department and Customer Service area.
In the spring of 2000, Beiter's Sunbury location expanded with the purchase of the former Montgomery Ward building at 1125 North Fourth Street in the Sunbury Plaza, allowing Beiter's to leave 349 Market Street and move into a 35,000 sq. ft building to service the Sunbury and surrounding communities. With such growth came a desire to have a name that would encompass a desire to service the community completely and wholly. Hence, Beiter's Home Center was born.
Always looking to better service our customer base, we moved from our downtown Williamsport store to the former Ames department store building in South Williamsport in 2003. This move provided us with additional retail space, an entire first floor display area and free parking for our patrons. It also made us completely handicapped accessible.
We also moved our Mansfield store to the former Ames Department store at 1442 South Main Street in February 2006. This has allowed us to stretch out to a much larger display area, offer plenty of free parking and expanded store hours - all to better serve our valued Northern Tier customers.
And we are continuing to grow! In March of 2008, we expanded again, this time to the East Lewisburg/Milton area. With the opening of our 5th store location at 3000 State Route 405, Milton (formerly Gemberling's Furniture) Beiter's continues to provide our valued customers with convenient access to our large inventory and low low prices.
Since 1966, Beiter's Appliance has grown from a small store in a residential section of Williamsport to a 5-store company filling not only appliance needs of the Susquehanna Valley and outlying communities, but also furniture, bedding, and electronics needs to fit almost any home at almost any budget.
Today, the success of Beiter's Home Center is based on the belief that we can be YOUR HOMETOWN HEADQUARTERS for all your home furnishing needs in this part of the state. This belief, combined with a philosophy of complete fairness to the customer is truly what has made us the company we are today.
